Purpose
In the aftermath of justice-reform bills passed by California voters in 2014 and 2016 that reclassified various felonies to misdemeanors with retroactive relief of past criminal convictions, the Clean Sweep Post-Conviction Project provides community-based outreach and representation to reclassify and reduce the collateral consequences for an estimated 20,000 convictions in Contra Costa.
A partnership of the Public Defender’s Office and two police agencies, and funded largely by private foundations, the project provides post-conviction legal relief to an estimated 5,000 people annually.
